A Better Wi-Fi Guide for Homes and Small Businesses

Improve Wi-Fi coverage and reliability by fixing router placement, interference, security and capacity before buying more equipment.

Separate internet speed from Wi-Fi quality

Your internet connection and your local Wi-Fi are related but different. A speed test beside the router can show whether the service reaches the premises correctly. A good result there but poor performance in another room usually points to coverage, interference or local network load.

Test at different times and locations using the same device. Record download speed, upload speed, latency and whether the problem affects one device or everyone. This evidence prevents unnecessary upgrades.

Place the router where radio signals can travel

A router hidden in a cabinet, placed on the floor or located at one end of a building must work through more walls and obstacles. Place it high, open and reasonably central, away from large metal objects, microwave ovens, thick concrete and crowded electrical equipment.

The faster 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands usually provide more capacity at shorter range. The 2.4 GHz band reaches farther but is more congested. Modern devices can steer clients between bands, but placement remains more important than a premium label on the box.

Choose access points or mesh for the layout

A large or multi-storey building may need more than one Wi-Fi point. Wired access points generally provide the most predictable business performance because each unit has a network cable back to the router or switch. A well-designed mesh system is useful where cabling is impractical, but each wireless hop can reduce available capacity.

Do not add repeaters randomly. Plan coverage so neighbouring access points overlap enough for roaming without competing unnecessarily. For offices, capacity—the number and activity of connected devices—can matter more than the maximum floor area printed on a retail box.

Secure and maintain the network

Change default administrator credentials, use WPA2 or WPA3 encryption and install firmware updates. Create a separate guest network for visitors and untrusted smart devices. Business computers, storage, payment systems and CCTV recorders should not share an unrestricted network with every device.

Keep a simple record of the router, switches, access points, network names, cabling and administrator ownership. Configuration backups and labelled cables make recovery much faster after a failure or reset.

Know when to request a site assessment

Persistent dead zones, dropped video calls, overloaded meeting areas or CCTV streams that freeze may require a survey rather than another consumer extender. A technician can measure coverage, channel use, cabling and power options, then recommend equipment sized to the actual environment.
